One of very few fighting game series I can actually play more than a few hours and not throw up. Sometimes a formula works very well, and for new iterations only minor tweaks would make it better. And their core fighting has NEVER changed since the first one. The new Dragon Quest for example got some low reviews from some people for reasons like that, but it's one of the most successful RPGs of all time, and bigger in Japan than even FF games. People rating games low because not enough changed in their opinion are totally missing the point of making a new installment. Changes I can live with because the core gameplay is there, and is awesome as it ever was and maybe even a little better, with a new skin, new levels, new story. This has super meters, soul charge and reversal edge as well as changing move sets some and balancing the game around all of that vs older SC. You change too much and you change the game's identity and what people like about it. Change for the sake of change is why we got SCV.

+ Pros: + Keeps what is good from earlier SC instead of breaking something that worked very well + Amazing Graphics + Great Soundtrack + Core cast isn't cut + Robust number of characters on launch + It isn't SCV + Character creation is robust - lost of people making cool crossover characters with it + Very fun ranked play + Core gameplay is the best + Cinematic moves added and lots of great particle effects Cons: - No chat or voicechat in casual lobbies - Laggy connections sound can jitter on PC - Had to wait 8 years+ for this game after SCV wasn't good itself so been even longer than that It's good they didn't change more.

Note: Street Fighter 4 is not included since it was originally released on Games for Windows Live, which we don't have access to the numbers of, and Ultra didn't crack 1,000 concurrent players in its launch month on Steam.Pros: + Keeps what is good from earlier SC instead of breaking something that worked very well + Amazing Graphics

It's also important to note that these are only Steam Charts' figures, and they may differ slightly when looking at other Steam tracking sites. You can see the top peak fighting game player numbers for launch month below, and pay attention to how they've steadily gone up within series and just how many of them belong to ArcSys and NetherRealm Studios. It's also interesting to see that, at the moment at least, well over 10 percent of Strive's total sales have been on PC though it'd be nice to know what the actual spread in demographics are. Strive's predecessor, Guilty Gear Xrd, anecdotally sold around 90,000-100,000 copies total with Sign's release though we've never gotten real confirmation on those numbers.Įven if they were double that, however, the new Guilty Gear appears to be the biggest release in the franchise to date likely due to a variety of factors.

The more people who bought a copy right away there is, the more likely they are to be playing it at the same time (especially in the first few days).ĪrcSys also found themselves with a sleeper hit just last year too when Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R was updated to include rollback netcode and new features in October 2020.Īccent Core went from a peak playerbase of 32 the month before to 2,330 when the big patch dropped, which has stayed steady around an average of 600 peak every month since.

While this doesn't actually confirm if Strive's launch numbers in total are higher than Mortal Kombat 11, it is a decent indication of where a game is at in the very start of its life cycle. The only thing still standing above it is the highest-selling ArcSys-developed title ever with Dragon Ball FighterZ and its whopping 44,234 peak in 2018.

In its short life thus far, Strive has reached a peak playerbase of people on at the same time of almost 31,000 concurrently, which greater than Tekken 7 and Street Fighter 5's numbers combined.īandai Namco and Capcom's flagship fighters brought in peaks of 18,766 and 13,807 players respectively during their release month. Though we can't really know just how many copies have been sold on PC specifically, Steam Charts' numbers suggest that Guilty Gear Strive is likely the second-largest fighting game launch ever on the platform.
